If I Grow Up By Todd Strasser

DeShawn is growing up in the projects. It's all he's ever known. It's all his family has ever known. It's all his kids will ever know. It is a never ending cycle of joining the gangs to survive and babies having babies. DeShawn is stuck in this cycle. He is a smart boy who tries to stay out of the gang, but knows he too will eventually succumb to his destiny in the projects. He has street smarts and that may be the only way to survive his life in the projects. This is a heartbreaking story of what is really going on the projects and what it takes to survive. DeShawn shows the reader how life really works and how he is stuck in the never ending cycle and may never get out.
